instructors for all of our winter schools. Check out the

has taken any of the schools is encouraged to help with teaching.

* **“Looking for Potential Ski Trip Leaders”:  *Jay Heeter of CMC’s
Backcountry Snowsports Initiative, wants former Backcountry Snowsports
Alliance members to contact him if they are interested in helping the CMC
Boulder Group increase its supply of ski trip leaders.  As background, the
BSA merged into the CMC this year and the largest number of BSA members were
moved into the Boulder Group based on place of residence.  Contact Jay at

*“Winter Camping Clinic Lecture”, Wednesday, 1/13, at **7 pm**: *This clinic
is geared toward those with minimal winter camping experience. The course
covers tent camping, building snow structures, walls & emergency shelters,

*“Avalanche Awareness Clinic”, 1/6:  *Museum sPEAKer Series: Visit
www.mountaineeringmuseum.org for more details. $3 CMC/AAC Members, $5
non-members, FREE to Friends of the Museum and AAC Library. 5:30 pm museum
reception, 7 pm presentation. Topics covered include: types of avalanches,
avalanche terrain, snowpack analysis, weather considerations, avalanche
decision-making, trip planning and preparation, travel techniques.**



*“Save the Poles”, 2/4, **6:30 – 9:30 pm**:* Free and open to the public at
the AMC.  Polar explorer Eric Larsen's 'Save the Poles' expedition will
journey to these last frozen places in attempt to tell their amazing story.
On November 12, 2009 Polar explorer Eric Larsen began the Save the Poles
Expedition, a first-ever journey to the North Pole, South Pole and summit of
Mt. Everest in a continuous 365-day period. His purpose? To travel to the
"front lines" of global warming to document the changes occurring in these

*"CMC Market Survey":*  In 2012, the Colorado Mountain Club will be
celebrating its centennial. The state has recently embarked on a "quest of
self discovery designed to ensure we will remain strong for another 100
years". CMC members are invited to help lead the state organization down the

minutes to complete, but the help you provide us will echo through our

*"New Exhibit-THIN AIR: An Exhibit on Altitude and Oxygen" *is now open at
the American Mountaineering Museum. This exhibit runs through May 2010.  For

*"Yellowstone in Winter 2010", 2/3-8, 2010:* Steaming geysers, bison, and
elk are all part of the experience of visiting Yellowstone National Park in
the winter. Trip includes round-trip bus and snow coach transportation

*"Raptor Nest Volunteers":* The City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain
Parks Department is looking for volunteers to help monitor nest sites for
rare birds of prey along the Front Range - falcons, osprey and eagles.
 Volunteers
have the unique opportunity to witness the courtship, nest development and
fledging of these local raptors.  The city is looking for people skilled at
bird identification, and can make a four-hour commitment each week. Hiking
to the nest sites can be strenuous. A few sites can be observed from a car.
Nests are typically occupied from February until late July. Training is held

Neptunestaff for this ski waxing clinic. Staff will demonstrate simple
techniques

*“Avalanche Clinic: Risk Management in Avalanche Terrain”, Wednesday, 1/6 at
**7 pm**:*   Presented by Alpine World Ascents.  The moment when you decide
to go for a backcountry tour is the beginning of a series of many important
decisions that affect the outcome of your adventure. When deciding on
whether to ski a slope or not, human factors must be taken into
consideration as well. Learn about critical decision making and how human
factors impact risk management.

*“Winter Climbs on **Longs Peak**”, 1/7 at **7 pm**:* Presented by Gary
Neptune.  Join Gary as he shares stories from his experiences climbing Longs
Peak in winter. Highlights include the 2nd winter ascent of the Diamond
Feb/March 1973 and the Notch Couloir in 1974. In addition to slides and
films he will share training tips that pertain to this type of mountain

*“Adventures with Eclipses and Northern Lights”, Saturday, 1/9 at 6
pm:*Join the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Explorers Club for its
monthly
program at the Fiske Planetarium featuring chapter member Doug Duncan, an
astronomer and director of the planetarium.  The program will last about an
hour and the charge is $10 per person. The program content features Doug’s
own adventures chasing solar eclipse observations around the world as well
his experiences of the beautiful northern lights.  Fiske Planetarium is on
the University of Colorado Campus in Boulder.
